THE CRUTCHLEY FAMILY IN THE STAFFORDSHIRE LICENSED TRADE

Collier's Arms

The traditional English pub seen here is the Colliers Arms, located on the High Street in Cheslyn Hay. This pub was once owned by Blencowe & Co. Ltd, a brewery which operated between 1889 and 1925, in the nearby town of Cannock. When Blencowe & Co. Ltd was purchased by W. Butler & Co. Ltd in 1925, the Colliers Arms and the other Blencowe houses were part of the sale.

According to historic records the Colliers Arms once boasted a stable, piggery, and various out buildings. Customers were accomodated in the pub's bar, smoke room, vault and parlour.

My relative Thomas Crutchley was the publican of this establishment between 1849 and 1881. Thomas was born on 20th November 1813 and baptised on 7th December 1813 at near by Salem Methodist church. After leaving the Collier's Arms Thomas stayed in the licensed trade, becoming publican of the Lord Nelson Inn, again in Cheslyn Hay. Thomas died on 12th April 1882.
